Public Figures Launch 'National Movement' For Democratic Reform In Kuwait

13 April 2024 Kuwait

A group of thirty-one prominent public figures has unveiled the establishment of the 'National Movement,' heralding it as a pivotal step towards fostering democratic values and societal progress in Kuwait. Describing itself as "a national societal movement," the initiative champions democracy as a fundamental human concept that begins with individual empowerment and culminates in collective welfare. Central to its vision is a comprehensive political reform agenda, with primary emphasis on electoral system enhancement to achieve advanced democracy and ensure effective freedom for all.

At the heart of the movement's objectives lies an ambitious plan for economic revitalization, anchored in diversification efforts and a strategic focus on income sources. Committed to combating corruption and restructuring state finances, the movement aims to fortify the pillars of education to pave the way for a prosperous future. Additionally, it pledges to safeguard the interests of the middle class and elevate the standard of living for all citizens.

In a formal statement, the National Movement declared itself a nurturing ground for reformers and visionaries dedicated to advancing the nation politically, economically, and socially. It envisions itself as a conduit for objective public oversight over key decision-making bodies, notably the legislative and executive branches, to foster a political equilibrium that prioritizes national interests above all else.

Emphasizing the sanctity of citizenship, the movement underscored the constitutional guarantee of Kuwaiti citizenship, cautioning against any attempts to undermine it. Such actions, it warned, would risk plunging Kuwait into bygone eras marked by economic turmoil and existential crises, profoundly detrimental to the nation and its people.
