Practical Step To Combat Corruption In Kuwait
Marwa Fatafta, Regional Advisor for the Middle East and North Africa at Transparency International (TI) said the confl ict of interests, mediation, contracts, and government procurement is one of the most frequently discussed issues in which to indicate the extent of corruption in Kuwait, reports Al-Rai daily. Marwa pointed out that Kuwait this year has made an important achievement and taken a practical step in the form of the approval of the national strategy to combat corruption, and “we hope to see a real implementation of it on the ground and that it will emerge from being a strategy on paper to change the reality and combat corruption in a practical, actual and real manner.”
Fatafta, in a statement to the daily, talked about a number of serious advice to improve the anticorruption mechanism in Kuwait, including the need to enact other legislation and laws such as the law of the right to access information and the conflict of interests law, and that anti-corruption efforts be integrated at all levels whether governmental, parliamentary or private sector, and the involvement of civil society in this.
Fatafta announced that the corruption perception index for 2019 will be announced at the end of next January, stressing that it is not possible to disclose any expectations regarding Kuwait’s ranking or what ranking it will obtain. She concluded by saying: “There is a positive movement to combat corruption in Kuwait, as I have met with offi cials of the Anti-Corruption Authority more than once, among them a meeting was held in Berlin and another in Kuwait and I felt there is a serious desire but when it comes to implementation let us wait and watch.”
