Naturalization Of Kuwaiti Wives Upsets 16 Associations

27 March 2022 Kuwait

The Interior and Defense Committee of the National Assembly has rejected a proposal regarding the 'naturalization of Kuwaiti wives', citing its incompatibility with two national values and the principles of justice.

An Arabic daily reported the associations' reactions to the reports that had been posted on social media by many government officials and parliamentarians recently about a quasi-government and a quasi-parliamentary consensus at a meeting of the Interior and Defense Committee of the National Assembly regarding the topics of "Naturalization of Kuwaiti wives." The Kuwaiti government has agreed to grant Kuwaiti citizenship to foreign wives after 18 years of marriage, regardless of whether or not they have children, as well as to allow Kuwaiti husbands to naturalize more than one spouse, with exceptions where necessary by the concerned authorities.

According to their statement, "Although we reject such proposals which are blatantly in conflict with the principles of justice and equality as well as national values, we are surprised about the legislator's decision not to address the conditions of Kuwaiti women who are married to foreigners and are still forced to renew their children's residency permits and pay fees for these services.

As a country, we must adhere to the constitutional constants that ensure fairness and equality for everyone in society, and find sustainable solutions that preserve the social fabric, achieve just citizenship, safeguard Kuwaiti families, upgrade our legislative system, and preserve our national identity.

In addition to being the signatory associations of the statement, the following organizations also took part: Kuwaiti National Fraternity, Women's Social Culture, Transparency, Defense of Public Funds, Doctor's Association, Kuwaiti Sorbetmists for Community Development, Hearing Disability, Working to Support Inventors, the Kuwaiti National Action Society, Information Security, Development Entrepreneurship, Empowerment of Kuwait's Families, and the Kuwait National Child Protection Society.
