Money-launderers Face 20 Years In Prison
According to Al-Qabas daily, Deputy Public Prosecutor Meshari Al-Salem has stressed the importance of combating money laundering, human trafficking, and migrant smuggling. Al-Salem made the statement when he attended a symposium on the sidelines of the third annual meeting of the Arab Public Representatives Association, which is being held in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh, with the participation of heads of public prosecutions and public prosecution bodies in Arab member states, as well as accompanying delegations, including Kuwait and the relevant international bodies.
A symposium entitled “Efforts by Arab Prosecutions in Combating Corruption, Money Laundry, Migrant Smuggling, and Human Trafficking ... Challenges and Impositions” stated that Kuwait has effective legislation to combat these crimes, which pose a threat to societies' economic and social security.
According to him, Kuwaiti legislators impose heavy penalties on those who commit human trafficking and smuggling migrants. If the crime results in the death of the victim, it can result in the death penalty, whereas if there are aggravating circumstances, it can result in 15 years in prison for the crime of human smuggling. In Kuwaiti legislation, money laundering is punishable by imprisonment for 20 years if it is linked to certain circumstances, most notably being committed by an organized group. He also confirmed that the Kuwaiti legislator granted the Public Prosecution certain powers, the most important of which is freezing and seizing funds.
Kuwait has signed many agreements that aim to unite efforts in order to reduce the crimes mentioned above; especially the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its two protocols, as well as the United Nations Convention against Corruption. Furthermore, Al-Salem noted that the Public Prosecution has investigated dozens of cases involving human trafficking, money laundering, and human smuggling in recent years, and issued numerous decisions and rulings concerning these cases, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in combating them.
