The Misdemeanor Court of Appeals overturned the verdict issued by the Court of First Instance which imposed a fine of KD 3,000 and a bail bond of KD 1,000 on a Kuwaiti girl who was accused of offending her friend via Facebook.

The court acquitted her of all charges. The Public Prosecution had accused the girl of misusing social media and smartphone by posting offensive comments about her friend on Facebook.

It stated that the comments caused mental harms to the plaintiff and negatively affected her reputation. During the court session, the defense counsel Lawyer Abdulmohsen Al-Qattan denied any relation to link his client to the Facebook account which included the offensive remarks, as claimed by the plaintiff. He said the case file has no evidences to support the plaintiff’s claims, indicating that the lawsuit was filed out of maliciousness.
