Kuwait Zoo Has Been Closed Since March 2020.
In March 2020, the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) closed the zoo "until further notice", as a precautionary measure to prevent a repeat outbreak of the Corona virus. The authority has yet to announce a date for its reopening, since the zoo was receiving about 170,000 visitors annually before the pandemic, from all segments of society, from all age groups, as well as being considered one of the country's leading tourist attractions, according to the Al-Qabas daily.
According to the daily, citizens now call for the reopening of the recreation outlet, pointing out that it would be illogical to close recreational facilities without announcing the date on which they will reopen. The zoo, which has an area of 180,000 square meters and is rich with various types of animals, birds, and reptiles, as well as a tram that takes visitors around the zoo, has become necessary to know its fate after the repercussions of the pandemic were removed months ago. During holidays in the past, about 2,000 people visited the zoo.
Since the zoo's facilities, including animal cages, electrical installations, toilets, and infrastructure in general, need to be restored and developed, it will take some time for the zoo to reopen. In the event that the works are completed immediately, the completion time would be between 6 and 12 months. In addition, the sources said the park contains 190 species of animals, birds, reptiles and mammals, a total of about 1,500 animals, and these animals were not affected by any diseases or losses during the closure more than two years ago, indicating that it was because a contract with a company to supply food inside cages was in place during that time. The sources cited the documents cycle between government agencies as a contributing factor to the slow completion of maintenance work at the zoo, noting that the zoo awaits more government attention.
