Kuwait Regrets Un Setback On Syria

22 December 2019 Kuwait

Kuwait's Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah has regretted the UN Security Council's failure to pass a draft resolution presented by Kuwait, Germany and Belgium to renew a mandate for the UN mechanism for cross-border aid delivery to Syrians.

In statements to the Kuwait TV and Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) after the UN Security Council session on Friday, Al-Jarallah expressed disappointment for the security council's failure to renew the required mechanism to provide aid for four million people in Syria who are in dire need for food and medicine.

He unveiled that there were marathon negotiations carried out by the permanent Kuwaiti delegation in the UNSC with other member states to pass the draft resolution.

Russia and China have used their veto power to block the draft resolution which called for extending an existing mechanism for delivery of aid to Syrians through four crossings: two in Turkey and one each in Jordan and Iraq to one year.
