Iraqi Fishing Boats Invade Kuwaiti Waters

18 April 2022 Crime News

Several Iraqi boats were intercepted by Coast Guard patrol boats north of Failaka Island after crossing into Kuwait's territorial waters.

As reported in a local Arabic newspaper, after monitoring the movements of the boats with a marine radar system, Coast Guard patrol and pursuit boats were dispatched to the area.

According to the daily, the Coast Guard forces the boats to stop, and after determining their identities, it was determined they were Iraqi fishing boats. After searching the boats, the patrolmen did not find any prohibited items, or forbidden fishing gear, and thus the Coast Guard Command Center received a notification.

The source added that the patrol command required the patrols to make the Iraqi fishermen sign a pledge not to repeat the offense (entering the territorial waters again), after ensuring they were entering by mistake and that they are fishermen with no ulterior motive.

Iraqi fishermen and their boats were requested by the Coast Guard administration to be returned to the Iraqi Navy at Khor Abdullah by Kuwaiti navy boats.
