In the summer of 2023, the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy will sign a direct contract with the Gulf Cooperation Council Electricity Interconnection Authority to purchase 600 megawatts, after the Central Agency for Public Tenders announced it had no jurisdiction over this matter.

It was reported by Al-Jarida daily, quoting responsible sources, that the ministry would proceed with purchasing energy from EIA once the regulatory authorities have approved it. The Fatwa and Legislation Department and the Audit Bureau will both have to approve direct contracting procedures.

According to sources, the ministry had earlier received approval from the Ministry of Finance to purchase electricity from the Authority in order to ensure a safe summer season for electrical production units.

Starting next June, electrical loads are expected to see an increase in energy consumption. With temperatures expected to rise between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius, Mutlaq Al-Otaibi, Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, and Minister of State for Housing Affairs had previously explained that, "for the current summer, 16,880 megawatts of electricity will be consumed, while 18,000 megawatts of electricity will be produced."

An electrical load index of 12740 megawatts was recorded on Friday, despite a surplus of 2235 megawatts. According to the water level, the water production rate exceeded the consumption rate by 489 million gallons, while the consumption rate reached 475 million gallons.
