The Family Court, in a remarkable ruling, has allowed a man to stop paying for his son’s expenses because the latter receives financial support from the Ministry of Higher Education for his education in the United States of America, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

In the lawsuit presented by the father’s defense counsel Lawyer Tariq Al-Kharas, he explained that, as per the final ruling, his client is mandated to provide his son with a maintenance sum of KD 250, while the latter receives a monthly amount of USD 5,530 from the Ministry of Higher Education for his studies in the United States of America.

During the court session, Lawyer Al-Kharas said, “It is lawful for a child without financial means to be supported by his father. This financial support continues until the daughter gets married or becomes self-sufficient, and until the son reaches the age of fifteen and can generate a suitable income. If the son completes his education but is unable to sustain himself due to physical or mental illness, or if he is pursuing education suitable for his age and capabilities, or if he lacks the means to earn, his father remains responsible for his maintenance. For the son to be supported by his father, he must be financially lacking and his father is either rich or able to earn, and the son is unable to earn because either he is too young, or he has a disability.”
