Cost Of Shipping Foodstuffs To Kuwait Has Increased 10 Fold: Al-baijan
The head of the Kuwaiti Federation of Foodstuffs Traders and Manufacturers, Abdullah Al-Baijan, revealed the cost of shipping foodstuffs to Kuwait has increased 10 fold during the last period, rising from $1,400 to $14,000 per ton, not to mention the high prices of the raw materials themselves.
Al-Baijan indicated in an exclusive statement to “Al-Anba” that most of the raw materials companies sold all their production for 2022 in advance, due to the mutations of the Corona virus, and the continuation of completely freezing the operation of factories, pointing out that these companies sell raw materials to manufacturers at fantastic prices.
Al-Baijan cited the cooking oil, saying, “We used to buy cooking oil in 2020 and late 2021 at a price of 900 dollars per ton, but now we contract for the same product at a price ranging between 2,400 and 2,600 per ton.”
He added that there are unacceptable rises in the rest of the raw materials needed to manufacture consumer products, calling on the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Finance to look at the experiences of neighboring countries and apply all means to reduce shipping burdens and reduce the value of local services such as warehouses, ports and customs.
He stressed that Kuwaiti merchants and manufacturers do not have the ability to determine the price of the commodity, as it is determined according to the prices of commodities in the foreign market, noting that the government must reconsider its decision regarding fixing the prices of pre-Corona commodities, stressing the need to set prices according to the applicable ratios globally, as the Ministry of Commerce is aware of these percentages, especially as they are imported from abroad through the catering company.
