Bangladesh Train Collision Kills At Least 17
In northeastern Bangladesh, two trains collided and killed 17 people and wounded more than 100 people, police and officials said.
According to authorities, a cargo train collided with a passenger train in the city of Bhairab, causing two passenger carriages to derrail.
A total of 17 bodies have been recovered. More than 100 people were injured,” said Sadiqur Rahman, a government administrator in Bhairab, which lies around 80km (50 miles) northeast of the capital Dhaka.
Rasel Sheikh, the local police chief, confirmed the death toll, citing rescuers at the scene, and said more than 50 people were hospitalized.
According to AFP, rescuers reported seeing bodies crushed and trapped under overturned coaches, with the death toll expected to rise.
The number of trapped people was not immediately known.
Azizul Haque Rajon, a senior fire official, told the Associated Press that the collision occurred at 3:30pm local time (09:30 GMT) when the cargo train heading to Chattogram hit the rear two cars of the Egarosindhur Godhuli Express passenger train bound for Dhaka.
Hundreds of people gathered at the scene where rescuers were cutting part of a carriage to rescue injured people. Overturned and shattered carriages were seen.
