32 Mps To Boycott Tuesday’s Session
A total of 32 MPs have announced that they will boycott the parliamentary session stated for Tuesday in a bid to prevent the new government from taking the constitutional oath in front of the National Assembly. Earlier, Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim invited the MPs to the upcoming session.
The new government is expected to take oath during this session whose agenda includes six bills and two grilling motions against HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid. MPs Khalid Al-Otaibi, Thamer Al-Suwait and Badr Al-Dahoum submitted one of the grilling motions against the premier; whereas MPs Muhammad Al- Mutair and Hamdan Al-Azmi submitted the other.
As per Article 142 of the National Assembly Decree, the first grilling motion is supposed to be removed from the agenda because of the resignation of the former government. The second grilling motion focuses on one issue — selective enforcement of laws.
In a related development, MP Osama Al-Menawer clarified that he was not enthusiastic about boycotting the session earlier; but this step seems necessary now considering the government committed several violations, such as the measures taken regarding the parliamentary membership of Bader Al-Dahoum and referring participants in a press conference held at Al- Dahoum’s house to the Public Prosecution. MP Khalid Al-Otaibi said: “We cannot believe that the government woke up all of a sudden and is now willing to ratify important bills.” He asserted the inclusion of certain bills in the agenda of the upcoming session is a trick aimed at ensuring quorum for the government to take the constitutional oath. He urged his colleagues to be vigilant in order to avoid falling in such a trap.
In addition, constitutional expert Dr Muhammad Al-Fili disclosed that 33 MPs and ministers must attend the session to achieve quorum. He explained the ministers are included in the count even if they have yet to take oath in front of the Assembly.
