Kuwait's Flexible Working Hours Helped During Ramadan ?
The introduction of a new flexible hours scheme in the public sector during Ramadan initially brought hope for shorter commutes and smoother traffic in Kuwait. However, these hopes were quickly dashed when the reality of traffic jams hit people hard once the holy month began.
Despite giving state departments the option to choose from three different timeslots for working hours, most departments have apparently settled with one schedule for all staff. Additionally, the short gap between the three options did not help, and the timings when public sector employees leave work still coincide with the time when students leave school.
As a result, motorists are stuck in standstill traffic during their daily commute, which has turned a 15-minute drive into an hour-long ordeal. The traffic disaster has become a major problem that everyone living in Kuwait has come to know and hate.
While the government's first attempt to apply a flexible working hours system may have failed, it is important to find better alternatives to address the traffic issue during Ramadan. The public sector and other organizations should consider staggered start and end times to reduce the number of commuters during peak hours. In addition, increasing the use of public transportation and carpooling can also alleviate traffic congestion.
It is essential to find effective solutions to limit traffic problems during Ramadan and other busy periods. By exploring new ways to manage traffic flow, Kuwait can enhance the quality of life for its citizens and residents.
