05 July 2022 Kuwait

Over the last five years from 2016 to 2021, Kuwaiti men have earned more than Kuwaiti women in the government sector, reports Al-Qabas daily. In December 2016, Kuwaiti women's salaries in the government sector were 27 percent higher than Kuwaiti men's salaries, according to a study prepared by the newspaper based on the latest statistics from the Central Statistical Bureau on the labor market.

According to statistics, Kuwaiti men in the government sector earned an average monthly salary of KD 1,874 as of December 2021. While Kuwaiti women earned an average monthly salary of KD 1,312, which is equivalent to 30% less than their male counterparts.

Facts and figures
Kuwaiti men earned an average monthly salary of KD 1,726 in the government sector at the end of December 2016, while Kuwaiti women earned KD 1,254; this is a difference of KD 427, or 27 percent.

The gap in salaries between men and women is not due to different salaries between men and women in the same position and rank, but is due to allowances and bonuses that are only paid to men, which can lead to a higher monthly salary for men than for women, such as social allowances, rent allowances, children's allowances, etc. Additionally, women are underrepresented in supervisory and leadership positions. Kuwaiti women's salaries decrease as a result of these factors.
