Epa To Remove Tires From Site, Hand Over Land To Pahw Soon
The Environment Public Authority (EPA) affirmed it would dispose off the tires located within South Saad Al-Abdullah City Housing Project site, and hand over the land to the Public Authority for Housing Welfare (PAHW) within one year, reports Al-Qabas daily. In its report on the integrated system for dealing with waste in Kuwait, the authority said it is considered the largest cemetery for automobile tires in the world.
Located in Arhiya (Sulaibiya) area west of Kuwait City, it has about 57 million old tires. The crisis of a relief zone came after many years of collecting tires in the landfill of Kuwait municipality, without adhering to any sound security standards or procedures, as used tires collected and thrown created random heaps in the form of hills in the landfill, indicating the large number of tires in one location caused security and environmental problems, as the landfill caught fire more than once, spreading fumes and gases to the residential areas, which seriously affected the air quality in the areas near the landfill.
