Traffic Dept Warns Against Sudden Turns, Clarifies Hazard Light Use
The General Traffic Department in Kuwait has launched a new public awareness campaign targeting unsafe driving behaviors, particularly sudden road turns and improper use of hazard lights. The department emphasized that such actions compromise road safety and increase the risk of traffic accidents.
In its official advisory, the department reminded motorists to signal all directional changes in advance. Whether turning left or right, drivers should use their indicator signals early and activate their hazard lights only after completing the turn — not during it — to alert other road users of any emergency situation or vehicle stoppage.
Correct Situations for Hazard Light Use
Authorities clarified that hazard lights, commonly referred to as four-way flashers, are not meant for routine directional changes. Instead, their use is reserved for:
- Sudden vehicle stops
- Mechanical breakdowns
- Driving at an unusually slow speed
- Emergency situations
Officials reiterated that misuse of these lights can lead to confusion on the road and should be strictly avoided.
Updated Penalties for Traffic Violations
Failure to Follow Lane Markings
- Settlement Fine: KD 50
- Court Penalty: Up to two months imprisonment, or a fine between KD 100 and KD 200, or both
Swerving Between Vehicles
- Settlement Fine: KD 30
- Court Penalty: Up to one month imprisonment, or a fine between KD 50 and KD 100, or either
Promoting Road Safety Through Awareness
As part of the campaign, the department has been actively sharing educational posts and reminders through its official channels to promote safe driving practices. Drivers are encouraged to stay alert, follow road signals, and avoid last-minute decisions behind the wheel.
The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to reduce road fatalities and promote responsible driving, especially during high-traffic seasons.
