Kuwait Revokes Citizenship Of 4,141 People, Including 4,135 Women
The official government gazette, Kuwait Alyom, has announced the issuance of three decrees and a Cabinet decision revoking Kuwaiti citizenship from a total of 4,141 individuals, including 4,135 women. This move aligns with legal provisions governing nationality in Kuwait.
Breakdown of the Citizenship Revocation Decrees
According to the first decree, citizenship was revoked from four individuals along with those who obtained it through affiliation. The second decree affected one individual and their associated dependents. Additionally, a Cabinet decision ordered the withdrawal of citizenship from another individual and those linked to them, in accordance with Article 21 bis “A” of the Nationality Law.
Legal Basis for Citizenship Withdrawal
Kuwait’s Nationality Law grants the government the authority to revoke citizenship under specific circumstances, particularly when individuals are found to have acquired it through fraudulent means or if they violate national security regulations. The recent revocation underscores the government’s commitment to upholding the integrity of Kuwaiti nationality.
Implications of the Decision
The large-scale citizenship revocation may have significant legal and social implications for the affected individuals. Those whose nationality has been revoked could face challenges regarding residency, employment, and access to public services. Furthermore, this decision reinforces the government’s efforts to regulate nationality and ensure compliance with citizenship laws.
Recent Nationality Law Updates and Government Actions
This move follows previous decisions aimed at reviewing nationality status to maintain the legitimacy of Kuwaiti citizenship. In recent years, the government has intensified efforts to scrutinize citizenship records, particularly in cases involving illegal naturalization.
