Kuwait Allocates 1.77 Billion Dinars For 18 Major Power, Water Projects
Kuwait has committed over 1.77 billion dinars to a series of 18 major projects designed to revitalize the country's electricity, water, and renewable energy sectors. These projects are expected to play a crucial role in improving the nation’s infrastructure and ensuring a sustainable future for its energy and water supply.
The timeline for completion is set for five years, with a focus on achieving full completion by 2030, backed by strong governmental support, including the active involvement of the Council of Ministers.
Key Projects to Boost Electricity and Water Capacity
Some of the largest projects within this initiative include the first phase of a combined cycle gas turbine system, which will provide 3,600 MW of electricity. This project, located in Nuweisib, is set to cost up to 950 million dinars. The Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy is also working on a major upgrade to a joint cycle gas turbine unit, expected to increase power and desalination capacities by 900 MW, with an investment of 257 million dinars.
Additionally, 100 million dinars have been allocated to install smart meters across the country, a move aimed at optimizing energy consumption and improving service efficiency.
Renewable Energy Projects and Sustainable Solutions
Kuwait is also focused on integrating renewable energy into its infrastructure, with projects including the purchase of renewable energy from third parties. This initiative is particularly cost-effective, with an estimated cost of just 1.35 million dinars and an expected completion date within the current year. The country’s goal is to transition towards more sustainable energy sources while ensuring reliability and cost efficiency.
Competitive Tendering for Local and International Companies
As part of this extensive investment plan, both local and international companies are invited to compete for the implementation of these key projects. This open competition is expected to bring in innovative solutions and enhance the efficiency of project delivery.
List of Key Projects Underway
The following projects are a part of the overall strategy to enhance Kuwait's electricity, water, and renewable energy systems:
- Smart Metering System Installation
- Purchase of Renewable Energy from Third Parties
- Supply, Installation, Operation, and Maintenance of 3,600 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Units (First Phase) at Nuweisib
- Desalination Projects: Mobile Reverse Osmosis Units for Low-Saline Water
- Gas Turbine Upgrades at Sabiya Plant (Phase IV)
- Fiber Optic Cable Installations
- Groundwater Tank Photovoltaic Panel Installations
- Seawater Desalination Plant Expansion at Doha
- 300 kV Voltage Air Lines for Al-Khairan Power Station
- Digital Transformation for Ministry of Electricity and Water
Government Support and Coordination for Timely Completion
The successful implementation of these projects is facilitated by close cooperation between various government entities, including the Central Authority for Public Tenders, the "Fatwa and Legislation" department, and the Audit Bureau. Their coordinated efforts ensure that all projects progress without delays, meeting the ambitious 2030 completion target.
