Coop Pricing Committee Moved To Commerce Ministry
In a major development aimed at improving consumer protection and regulating market prices, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Social Affairs has officially announced the transfer of the Cooperative Societies’ Pricing Committee to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
According to Ministry spokesperson Yousef Al-Mutairi, this step will centralize the pricing process for companies supplying goods to cooperative societies, enabling a more standardized and efficient system for price comparison and cost analysis.
The move comes in line with Cabinet directives and a newly signed cooperation protocol between the Ministries of Social Affairs and Commerce.
Electronic Price Comparison Platform Planned
Al-Mutairi also revealed that, in collaboration with the Federation of Cooperative Societies, an electronic platform will soon be launched to compare and track product prices across all cooperatives. This platform is expected to increase transparency, streamline pricing mechanisms, and protect consumer interests.
Cabinet-Backed Protocol Strengthens Price Monitoring
The Consumer Prices Committee, previously under the Federation of Cooperative Societies, will now be fully administered by the Ministry of Commerce, which holds the legal and technical authority for price monitoring. However, the committee will include representatives from all three entities:
- Ministry of Commerce and Industry
- Ministry of Social Affairs
- Federation of Cooperative Societies
This tripartite collaboration aims to foster clear responsibilities, ensure accountability, and build public trust in the pricing process.
Ministerial Praise for Integration Efforts
Al-Mutairi praised this transition from inter-ministerial cooperation to full integration, emphasizing the efforts of Minister of Commerce and Industry Khalifa Al-Ajeel and Minister of Social Affairs Dr. Amthal Al-Huwailah.
What This Means for Kuwaiti Consumers
The unification of the pricing committee under the Ministry of Commerce is expected to result in:
- Fairer and more consistent prices across cooperative societies
- More accurate cost analyses for goods
- Enhanced government oversight
- Greater accountability and transparency in pricing decisions
