Woman Set On Fire By Husband During Argument Over Unwanted Pregnancy Dies In Lebanon
Lebanese news website Annahar.com reported that a woman died after her husband attacked her and then set her on fire during an argument over an unwanted pregnancy during Lebanon's economic crisis.
In critical condition, Hana Mohammed Khodor, 21, suffered full body burns after her husband set her on fire with the house gas cylinder.
According to local media, A.A., the husband beat his five-months pregnant wife brutally and fought with her because she refused to abort the baby.
A.A. reportedly did not want the child to be burdened with extra financial burden, as he and his wife came from poor backgrounds.
According to a doctor at Al-Salam Hospital, Khodor was admitted on Aug. 6 after suffering 100 percent body burns.
According to the doctor, she is fighting for her life as we speak. She is between life and death in the intensive care unit. Hana was five months pregnant when the incident happened. The baby died and we had to operate on her to remove the fetus. Her chances of survival are very bleak.”
According to a medical report, she has third-degree burns and is on life support. Attending doctors have waived their daily fees, which still leaves the impoverished Khodor family with a daily cost of $400, excluding treatments, operations and reconstructive surgery.
The medical report from Al-Salam Hospital states she will need to undergo further treatment for three months if she survives.
The hospital bill for her treatment is already thousands of dollars, according to Abdul Rahman Haddad, a family friend.
Her daily blood platelets (transfusions) cost $100 each, in addition to the daily cost of the hospital bed, medical equipment, and ICU care. Her family is extremely poor, and she is a young woman … they need any form of medical assistance,” said Haddad.
Haddad said the husband had been planning to flee the country when the Lebanese Internal Security Forces arrested him.
According to the victim's aunt, A.A. beat his wife brutally to coerce her into aborting the fetus. “When she refused to abort the baby, he took her home and set her on fire using the gas cylinder,” she said.
Khodor's father urged the public to donate what they could to help treat and save his daughter.
Khodor undergoes several operations every day since she was admitted to the hospital, according to doctor Gabriel Al-Sabe'e.
Her life is being supported and she gets resuscitated daily. Her situation is extremely critical due to the severity, and huge areas of her body that got burned,” he added.
