Union Allows Fishermen To Fish For Mead Inside Kuwait Bay

15 August 2022 Kuwait

Kingfish fishing has been banned for two months, from August 15 to October 15, according to the chairman of the Kuwaiti Federation of Fishermen, Zaher Al-Suwayan. He also urged all fishermen to follow the fishing seasons in order to protect the nation's fish reserves and riches. Al-Suwayan claimed in a statement to a local Arabic daily that the fishing industry is one of the most crucial ones for the nation's food security and should be protected in order to grow and receive more support. He also noted that unlike other subsidies for food security sectors, the support for fishermen has remained static since the 1990s.

He emphasised the need to permit fishermen to fish for mead inside Kuwait Bay in accordance with controls set up by the Environment Public Authority and under the supervision of the fisheries sector in the Public Authority for Agriculture, emphasising that the mead fish are only found in shallow waters and if they are not fished they migrate to neighboring countries. He hoped that PAAAFR would allow fishing for mead inside the Kuwait Bay after getting the approval from the Environment Public Authority under the supervision and control of its inspectors, especially as it is one of the favourite foods of citizens and its presence in abundance will help reduce prices.

He clarified that the Environment Public Authority has allowed fishermen to fish in Kuwait Bay with prior reservations made on the authority's website. He hoped that the fishermen would participate in this by expressing their willingness to pay any fees necessary to supply the markets with the necessary quantities for consumers.
