There has been a spike in suicides in Kuwait, reports say, and two suicide attempts were thwarted by Kuwaiti police.

In Al Farwaniya governorate, Al Rai newspaper reported an Asian man threatened to kill himself by jumping from a footbridge.

A security source said police were alerted about the threat and responded to it by placating and restraining him.

He later remained in custody for legal proceedings, his nationality and age unknown.

Another Kuwaiti man had attempted suicide by leaping from a five-storey building, but firefighters managed to restrain him, according to an article in the same paper.

It added that he was turned over to competent agencies.

Both suicides lacked clear motives.

Kuwaiti media have reported several suicides in recent months.

A resident of Al Farwaniya executed suicide by hanging himself last month. The dead man was an Indian expat.

In Kuwait, a country of roughly 4.6 million people, most of whom are foreigners, 41 suicides and 43 suicide attempts were registered last year.

Kuwaiti sources reported last October that expatriates who attempt suicide face deportation after such attempts have risen in the country.

According to Al Qabas newspaper, "the Interior Ministry instructed security personnel to handle these cases firmly."

According to local media, Kuwait has increased security at the Sheikh Jaber Causeway after suicide attempts increased.
