Two Days Of Closure For Souk Mubarakiya Area. Moi Urges The Public Not To Visit
Sheikh Ahmed Al-Nawaf, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, said today that the Public Security Department will close the affected area of Souk Mubarakiya for two days to protect the properties of the shop owners and to ensure their safety.
An enormous fire broke out in the Souk Mubarakiya today afternoon, but the firefighters were able to put it out.
Kuwait's Minister visited the site and said that the market will be reopened as soon as all the necessary procedures have been completed. During the holy month of Ramadan, especially, people enjoy visiting the Souk Mubarakiya, he said.
He thanked the fire department and the Interior Ministry for controlling the fire in a timely manner, and for keeping the crowd away from the accident site.
While the public gathered in large numbers near the site, special forces were used to disperse them. The crowd was keen to photograph such incidents, so officials closed the area and asked them to leave. Most of these shops are covered with a special material that is prone to collapsing on people as they pass beneath it.
Deputy Undersecretary for the MoI, Lieutenant-General Anwar Al-Barjas, urged the public not to visit the site until all procedures had been completed.
As a result, the Ministry of Health activated emergency plans at all public hospitals and designated Amiri Hospital as the main facility for receiving cases. Team members from the Ministry handled incidents on the spot.
According to the latest update at 7:00 pm, eight firefighting teams are still battling today's fire that raged through dozens of shops in Souk Al Mubarakiya.
