Turkey Earthquake Death Toll Rises To 25
Today, the official Turkish Anatolia News Agency quoted the disaster management in the country as saying that the death toll from the earthquake that struck the city of Izmir, western Turkey, on Friday, has risen to .25
The agency said that 804 people were injured in the earthquake, noting that rescue efforts are continuing in nine damaged buildings. Three other people were pulled out alive 17 hours after the earthquake.
According to “reported”, a five-magnitude aftershock occurred this morning, Saturday morning, in Seferihisar district, in Izmir.
A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck Izmir on Friday.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday in Istanbul that the authorities were using “all available means” to help those affected.
The earthquake struck at a depth of 16.5 km at Sverihisar, causing the sea level to rise. The earthquake was followed by 19 aftershocks, yesterday.
Izmir Governor Yavuz Selim Kosjar said yesterday that at least four buildings had collapsed, and a tsunami swept the beaches on a limited scale following the strong earthquake that struck the city on the Aegean Sea. The TRT channel showed footage of flooded streets, cars and boats that had been towed away, as well as restaurants and workplaces that had been destroyed. It also showed several cars buried under the rubble. Local residents joined the rescue effort in a collapsed seven-story building with 21 apartments in the Berkeley area.
The province of Izmir is located on an active seismic fault line. A major seismic fault in northern Anatolia triggered a deadly earthquake near Istanbul in 1999, killing more than 17,000 people.
