The Philippine Government Allegedly Raises The Age To Work Abroad As Domestic Workers

According to Al-Qabas, the Philippine government has raised the employment age of its domestic workers who work abroad to 24 years to "protect them from human trafficking." The move will soon apply to Filipino workers brought to Kuwait and other countries. The specialist in domestic labor affairs, Bassam Al-Shammari, denied that raising the age of domestic workers would affect Filipino immigration to Kuwait, noting that Kuwaiti offices adhere to the conditions that labor exporting countries demand.

In regards to the Filipino domestic workers, Al- Shammari said, "the general situation of the domestic labor market is stable and new contracts are being signed, but the fees associated with travel tickets and contracts are still high and do not match the price set by the Ministry of Commerce."

Filipino workers' travel to Kuwait costs between 275 and 295 dinars per way currently, with a review of the pricing of new contracts for offices expected by the Ministry of Commerce, noting that "separating the ticket price from the current price could be a satisfactory solution". Unless the contract holder bears the travel ticket, the office contract price is 890 dinars. There were 141,000 Filipino domestic workers in the country during the first three months of this year, an increase of 5,631 over last year's figures.
