Teachers Complain About Frequent Internet Disruptions

12 August 2020 Kuwait

Educational staff in schools gave many complaints about frequent interruptions due to unsteady internet connection on the second day of online education for the supplementary school year 2019-2020, reports Al-Rai daily.

The daily said, quoting staff, that this unstable internet connection caused confusion during the virtual lessons and prevented the education from progressing well. Teachers revealed that services in many secondary schools are lacking, while the presence of educational staff in this environment does not make any sense; especially since the education lessons online is carried out on their personal devices, communication networks, and other service related matters.

They emphasized that some schools lack sterilization tools, have problems with maintenance and air conditioning, and there is a shortage of cleaning workers that made the work environment completely unsuitable for continuing the education lessons online as part of the school day. The teachers said: “Most of the virtual class time is devoted to the explanation and not to students’ questions or participation. Here, the teacher cannot measure the extent of students’ interaction, acceptance of the new educational system and the extent of their understanding, but through the experience which is still nascent and difficult to judge. We can say their interaction is good up to this point, although there are no concrete indications for that.”

They explained that the absenteeism rate is normal in most schools and the number of those who failed to participate in the classes is within the acceptable range, but they will be subject to the school regulations and will be penalized with the grading deduction clause despite the online registration of the educational seminar, and the student’s ability to enter the lesson any time. They stressed that the grading distribution mechanism under this system is as follows: participation, attendance, homework and school assignments.
