Suspension Opens Over-60s Window
The Public Authority for Manpower (PAM) said the expected opening of the automated system for the renewal of work permits for non-graduate expatriates who are 60 years and above, does not mean new work permits will be issued automatically, reports Al-Anba daily. Meanwhile, the suspension of the director of the authority gives the right ‘legally’ for his deputy to withdraw the decision that was issued by his predecessor to stop renewing work permits for this category of expatriates.
In implementation of the Civil Service Law, the Minister of Commerce and Industry Dr. Abdullah Al-Salman, and Chairman of PAM had earlier suspended from work the PAM Director-General because he had issued an ‘illegal’ decision to prevent the renewal of residence for this category of people. The suspension came at the request of the Fatwa and Legislation Department of the Council of Ministers. Sources told Al-Anba the decision of Al-Salman to suspend the PAM director Ahmed Al-Mousa, opens the door for the minister — if he wants — to assign Al- Mousa’s deputy to carry out the work of the general manager and open the door for renewal of work permits. However, some sources said, “What is the benefit of twisting and turning? If the law was wrong from the start, the Minister of Commerce should have taken the right decision there and then.”
