Sri Lanka Issues Shoot-at-sight Orders

11 May 2022 India

On Tuesday, Sri Lankan officials issued shoot-at-sight orders as the protests devolved into unwelcome violence. With lethal brutality, the building and cars were set on fire.

Anyone plundering public property or committing bodily injury must be shot on sight, according to the defence ministry. In Colombo, supporters of the government used clubs to strike protestors. The demonstrators were calmly witnessing the economic crisis demonstration.

Later that night, mobs reacted across the country, setting fire to scores of ruling-party leaders' residences and even attempting to attack the prime minister's official palace in the capital.

Despite the curfew, protests persisted on Tuesday, as police fired into the air at two sites to disperse rioters attempting to torch vehicles.

On Tuesday, eight people died, and more than 230 people were wounded. At least 42 pro-Rajapaksa MPs' homes were set on fire by the enraged crowds.
