Salmi Tire Dump Fire Was Arson
Salmi's Environment Public Authority designated more than 4,000 square meters as an area for dumping old tires, and the fire devoured thousands of them.
According to Al-Qabas, the tires were moved from Rahiya to their current location after the area was designated as a residential area and handed over to the Public Authority for Housing and Welfare (PAHW).
An investigation has been completed by the Accident Investigation Department of the Directorate-General of Fire Department (DGFD), and witnesses have also been interrogated.
It appears that the stored materials and the wind speed contributed to the rapid spread of the fire, which was extinguished and brought under control under DGFD supervision.
According to the fire sources, the investigating party has not ruled out arson, and whoever is found guilty will face severe punishment.
In response to this incident, Al-Qabas learned that three factories were recycling used tires for export. Nearly 42 million tires were destroyed in the fire.
Based on a letter she addressed to the Director General of the Public Authority for Industry, Eng Samira Al-Kandari, Acting Director General of the PAHW, asked to stop the distribution of industrial plots in Salmi.
In spite of the request to stop granting plots of land to ensure that they are distributed properly, Al-Qabas sources confirmed the suspension had lasted more than six months according to the authority’s request issued in January, which obstructs the development of the industrial zone devoted to tire recycling.
