Residents Can Now Renew Driving Licenses Online

The General Traffic Department has begun renewing driving licenses of expatriates online, after stopping the practice for some time.

Well-informed security sources told Al-Rai the General Traffic Department had suspended the renewal of driving licenses of expatriates, whether through online or in person, and allowed the renewal ‘online’ only for citizens, GCC citizens, bedoun and household drivers, (Article 20).

The sources indicated this was done to organize the renewal process of driving licenses for expatriate and ensure that the licensers were issued in compliance with the specific conditions, as it had come to the knowledge of the concerned authorities that many expatriates are not eligible for having driving licenses and that they acquired them fraudulently or those who had acquired them after meeting certain condition are no longer eligible and should have surrendered.

The sources indicated that expatriates can easily access the website of the General Directorate of Traffic and renew their driving licenses 6 months before their expiry date, according to the applicable conditions and regulations.
