Residency Violators Rise To 180,000 Due To Absence Of Inspection Campaigns

19 January 2021 Kuwait

The number of residency violators in Kuwait rose to a record number as it reached 180,000. The number of illegal residents has increased by 38 percent from what they were five months ago due to the absence of inspection campaigns, Al-Rai daily reported.

Even though the Ministry of Interior provided successive deadlines to amend their residency status, very few of them responded to the deadlines issued by the ministry and amend their status by paying fines or by leaving the country.

Sources told the daily that the Ministry of the Interior faces several obstacles with violators of the residency law and the owners of expired visas in Kuwait, most notably the constant flight ban to 35 countries.

The Ministry of the Interior has called on more than one occasion the violators of residency to settle their status, but only a small number of 2,500 violators benefited from the last grace period.

Source pointed out that the last date to amend residency status is January 31, pointing out that only 10 days left until the end of this month. Nevertheless, there is no serious move by the joint tripartite committee, formed by the Ministry of Interior and Manpower and the Ministry of Trade, which is supposed to carry out inspection campaigns and take necessary actions.
