Recruitment Of Domestic Workers Is Hampered By A Long Documentary Cycle

21 May 2022 Kuwait

A draft memorandum of understanding regarding the employment of Ethiopian domestic workers in Kuwait has been completed by Jamal Al-Jalawi and Ngusu Gerimanuel, representing the Ministries of Justice and Integrity. In a statement to the Press Agency, Bassam Al-Shamri noted that the memorandum is time-sensitive, stating "one of the provisions is that Ethiopian translators be employed in the recruitment centers."

The Ethiopian domestic worker will not arrive in Kuwait until at least 4 months from the time of signing the letter of understanding, Al-Shammari told a local Arabic newspaper. In a statement, Al-Shammari explained that "recruiting the secretary alone and printing the residence permit for her takes more than a month."

It was said that 90 percent of domestic worker escapes were related to the disparities in salaries between nationalities, and that people need to be educated about how to best treat domestic workers.
