Qatar Welcomes Anew Kuwait Gulf Initiative
Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad Al-Thani on Sunday welcomed anew Kuwait’s initiative to resolve the Gulf crisis as a center for all initiatives launched by friends. In a joint press conference with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres following the signing of agreements between Qatar and the UN on the sidelines of the second day of the Doha 2018 Forum, Sheikh Mohammad said His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah made efforts during the last period, which is still valued by the Qatari people.
“We in Qatar are open to a constructive dialogue based on mutual respect and a common vision of the substance of the dispute they are talking about,” he said. “We appreciate the initiatives of various countries such as the United States in this context and we have always supported the solution through dialogue in any conflict that may arise,” he added. The Foreign Minister announced that Qatar would support the funding of the UN organizations in the amount of $500 million, to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two sides.
He stressed that the signing of the agreements between Qatar and the UN stems from the solid relationship between Qatar and the various UN institutions and in line with Qatar’s foreign policy and its responsibility as an active partner in the international community.
Sheikh Mohammad congratulated Guterres on the agreement between the Yemeni parties in Sweden as a first stage to achieve peace in Yemen, hoping this peace will be achieved and that it will be a first step towards the peace process in Yemen. For his part, Guterres underlined the important support that Qatar provides to various UN agencies, which contributes distinctly to operation of different sectors in these agencies. He pointed out that one of the agreements signed by the two parties is an agreement to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for the advancement of its work through multi-year assistance.
On the sidelines of the forum, a number of partnership agreements were signed between Qatar and the UN to support the bodies of the International Organization in the presence of Sheikh Mohammad and Guterres. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Qatar Development Fund and the UN organizations, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the UN Development Program (UNDP) until 2023, including the signing of a grant agreement for the UNDP project to establish development impact laboratories in 60 developing countries.
