Qatar Hails Kuwaiti Efforts To Defuse Gulf Crisis

Qatar has praised Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah for his efforts to resolve a bitter row between it and its Gulf neighbours.

“His Highness, the Emir of Kuwait has a great place in the heart of every Qatari citizen as we saw him at the beginning of the Gulf crisis in 2017 travelling from one country to the other in an attempt to heal the rift. His commitment to these efforts has continued until today to restore unity to the Gulf house,” Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed Bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani said.

In June 2017, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt broke off diplomatic and transportation links with Qatar over its support for extremist groups. The boycott has taken a toll on the Qatari economy. It has also cast a shadow over the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) that comprises Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman. Over the past three years, Kuwait has sought to end the rift without success so far.

“The State of Qatar, the government and the people, praise efforts of Kuwait not only to contribute to solving the Gulf crisis, but to solving other crises and for its humanitarian contributions to Yemen or post-war Iraq,” the Qatari official added, according to the Qatari news agency QNA.

Last week, Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Ahmed Nasser Al Sabah held talks with senior officials in Doha. Qatari media said the talks had covered relations between the two countries and issues of mutual interest.

The Saudi-led bloc has announced a raft of conditions for mending fences with Doha.

The demands include Qatar’s severance of links with militant and terror groups, scaling down ties with Iran and shutting down Al Jazeera TV, seen as a mouthpiece of the banned Muslim Brotherhood.

Qatar has refused the conditions, saying they violate its sovereignty.

The Arab quartet has accused Qatar of lacking seriousness in resolving the crisis.
