Prosecution Calls For Tougher Penalties For ‘corrupt Judges’

29 January 2022 Kuwait

The Court of Appeal has set February 9, 2022, to look at the appeal filed by the defendants and the Public Prosecution in the case which is known as “the bribery of judges.”

The lower court had earlier found the ‘judges’, lawyers, and businessmen guilty, put them behind bars, and seized the expensive vehicles which the judges had received as bribes, in addition to ordering them to pay fine and removal from their posts, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

Informed sources told the daily, the Public Prosecution has demanded tougher penalties for the eight judges including the two judges — one of whom escaped with a fine, and the other was released citing lack of evidence.

The sources pointed out that 4 of the 6 judges surrendered after the verdict was issued, and submitted requests for their release, which were rejected by the Appeals Court to be considered on the day of the session, while two of the convicted judges have gone into hiding.

The court had sentenced the accused judges in the case, which caused a huge outcry in the local public opinion, with sentences of varying lengths, ranging from 4 15 to years in prison, and a fine of between 9000 and 400,000 dinars.
