Power Consumption Up With Hot Weather

06 June 2021 Weather in Kuwait

The power consumption index continues to soar daily; setting a record of 14,506 megawatts on Wednesday — about 250 megawatts higher than Tuesday when the consumption reached 14,250 megawatts and around 500 megawatts higher than Monday when consumption reached 14,000 megawatts during peak hours, reports Al-Jarida daily. The above-mentioned power consumption rates are considered record highs compared to consumption during the scorching heat of summer in the past years. In a previous press statement, Minister of Electricity and Water Dr Misha’an Al-Otaibi disclosed that the expected maximum power consumption this summer is 16,000 megawatts. He then called for rationalization of consumption, while affirming that the ministry is always ready for the worst.

Meanwhile, sources from the ministry revealed the power production capacity is enough to meet the needs of the whole country — around 18,000 megawatts; while the power reserve capacity exceeded 20,000 megawatts according to the latest statistics of the ministry. Sources pointed out that the increasing consumption — even if it remains below the current ceiling of the production capacity — greatly affects the capacity of some main and secondary stations which could lead to regional faults. Sources said the electricity network supplies power to 50,000 transformers in various governorate and the rate of consumption in these transformers usually reaches the maximum during peak hours; indicating this might result in power interruptions.
