Port Containers Checked For Safety After Inflammable Substances Reported
Kuwaiti officials have inspected containers at a major port after receiving a report claiming that inflammable substances were stored there, according to a local media report.
Head of the Kuwait Environment Public Authority Abdullah Al Ahmed had inspected the Port of Shuaiba, south of Kuwait City, where containers were opened and samples taken to verify their safety.
All containers were opened. It was made sure the presence of non-inflammable aluminum oxide,” Al Ahmed was quoted as saying by Al Anba newspaper.
The official added that the taken samples were from non-inflammable substances. “Consequently, there is no danger they may spark in flames as happened in some countries.”
Deadly blast
A deadly blast, blamed on stored ammonium nitrate at Beirut port, earlier this month has prompted countries in the region to inspect their harbours for potential lethal chemicals.
Al Ahmed cited ongoing inspection efforts to ensure the non-presence of chemical substances of unknown origin at Kuwaiti ports. “They are handled according to international laws.”
Head of Kuwait Ports Authority Youssef Al Abdulallah said that a separate zone for materials deemed dangerous is designated and isolated from other goods “under special specifications according to world standards”.
