Texas School Shooting - Ramos Kills 19 Students, 2 Teachers At Elementary School
Officials say Salvador Ramos shot his grandmother before opening fire in a Texas elementary school, killing 19 small children.
The 18-year-old was a US citizen and a student in Uvalde, a small town close to the Mexican border where the tragedy occurred.
A picture of Ramos that surfaced in the local media depicted a young man with dark hair staring blankly in front of him.
"He shot their grandma at their grandmother's house," said Erick Estrada of the Texas Department of Public Safety, adding that she was eventually transported to a medical facility.
Following the incident, a 66-year-old lady was brought to a San Antonio hospital in critical condition, according to healthcare officials, who did not release any other information.
Ramos fled the scene wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with a rifle after firing at his grandmother, Estrada said.
He then crashed near a ditch near Robb Elementary School, exited his vehicle, and ran toward the school, where law enforcement officers attempted but failed to stop him.
Ramos stormed the school and opened shooting around 11:30 a.m. local time (4.30 p.m. GMT).
"And then he went on to enter numerous classrooms and start discharging his pistol," Estrada said on CNN.
Thursday was supposed to be the last day of school for the 500 pupils at Robb Elementary, who are largely Hispanic and aged five to eleven.
No car chases had been recorded in the vicinity, according to Estrada, implying that the traffic accident was unprovoked.
According to Abbott, two police officers were injured in the shootout.
"Detailed background information on the subject, his motive, and the sorts of weapons used, the legal right to acquire them, and conduct a full crime-scene investigation and reconstruction," stated Abbot.
According to Estrada, it's unclear whether Ramos has had previous run-ins with the law.
Ramos acted alone, according to Pete Arredondo, the Uvalde School District Police Chief in charge of the investigation.
Several images of the young man were posted on an Instagram account linked to the suspect, which has since been removed.
