Parliament Of Kuwait Approves Renaming The Term 'maid' As 'domestic Worker'

15 March 2022 Kuwait

The National Assembly Parliament passed the draught bill on Tuesday, replacing the term "maid" with "domestic worker" to guarantee that all Kuwaiti laws are consistent with international norms, particularly those pertaining to human rights.

The vote resulted in the approval of 32 MPs and the rejection of one member out of the total of 33 present.

According to the explanatory note, the adjustment was made to circumvent reservations expressed by international human rights groups and labor-related authorities over the use of the term "maid" in legislation regulating domestic labor or other regulations.

The amendment also requires that "private maid" be replaced with "private domestic worker" in any other laws.
