Outstanding Dues Must Be Settled Before Installation Of Smart Meters

12 December 2021 Kuwait

The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said the ministry has set up a mechanism to allow expatriates who owe the ministry outstanding electricity bills to settle their bills in what it called the ‘split system’ before installing the smart electricity meters so that the rights of the state are protected.

Al-Jarida quoting MEW sources said the ministry will study each case separately before allowing the debtors to pay according to the mechanism primarily to preserve the funds of the Ministry and to allow debtors to pay the money in full.

The sources told the daily the debt splitting system differs from the installment system meaning those who owe the ministry will be given time to pay ‘in split system’ meaning the amount will be divided into parts and to be paid within the allotted time frame after determining the person’s financial situation.

Sources pointed out MEW is keen on the success of its new systems for smart meters and is racing against time to complete the installation process, with a daily limit of 600 smart meters, after conducting the necessary survey in the governorates in which the meters will be installed, to ensure the accuracy of the data for the property owners in which the installation will be carried out.

She indicated that the ministry takes a weekly statement on the number of smart meters that are being installed, as 35,000 meters were installed last week, and the number is scheduled to exceed 38,000 at the beginning of this week.
