One-hour Surgery To Remove Bullet From Child's Skull

03 February 2023 Kuwait

An Ibn Sina Hospital neurosurgeon, Dr. Hamad Jabr Al-Enezi, performed surgery on the toddler to remove the bullet from his skull that was allegedly fired from a machinegun during a wedding celebration in Jahra, reports Al-Rai daily. According to the daily, the incident occurred while the child was playing with his peers in the compound of his family home.

The child's condition is stable, but Dr Al-Enezi said he is not yet able to move his right side, while pointing out that the possibility of him becoming disabled in the future is slight. Dr Al-Enezi said the child suddenly fell on the ground crying and screaming with blood coming out of his head. He had already lost consciousness. The bullet had settled at the bottom of the child's skull after the child was rushed to the hospital and X-rays showed it.

In a delicate operation on the child, Al-Enezi explained, he performed with trainee Dr Youssef Abu Sido, which took about an hour and a half, to stop the bleeding in the head and extract the bullet. In his opinion, after the effects of anesthesia gradually faded, the three-year-old opened his eyes and started moving his left side, but his right side had not moved until now, since the bullet had blocked the nerve cells' path. He expressed his hope that the child would be able to walk in the future, and there is a high probability that he will survive, but at the moment the percentage of his disability is unclear. Al-Enezi explained the bullet was fired from a machine gun and felt sorry for the child who may have to live the rest of his life with a handicap in the event that he does not recover.
