Oman: Muslims Breaking Fast In Public During The Day In Ramadan Can Face Jail Time And Fines

Omani media reported that any Muslim found publicly breaking their fast during the day during Ramadan will be jailed and/or fined.

Those who break their fast during Ramadan without a legitimate reason may be punished with imprisonment and fines ranging from OMR1 to OMR5, or with either of these penalties according to Article (312) of the Penal Code."

Several conditions must be met before a public fast breaking can be punished:

1. The person who breaks the fast is a Muslim, practices some Islamic rites, and is registered as a Muslim in public and private records. Islam is the first requirement, so there are no punishments for non-Muslims or other religions.

2. Breaking the fast by eating, drinking, smoking, or in any other manner that violates the fast.

3. In Ramadan, the fast cannot be broken during the day if there is no legitimate reason. There are several legitimate reasons for being absent, including being ill, traveling, undergoing menstruation, or any other legitimate reason.
