All Indians holding non-emigration check required (non-ECR) passports, who are travelling to select countries for overseas employment, will now need to register online at an Indian government portal.

According to a notice by the Ministry of External Affairs in India, this step has been taken for the protection and welfare of Indian emigrants abroad.

Indians seeking employment to Afghanistan, Bahrain, Indonesia, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, Thailand, UAE and Yemen will now need to register themselves at www.emigrate.gov.in.

To register, visit the website and key in the details at the link "ECNR registration", and follow the steps to fill the registration form. On successful completion of registration, the emigrant would receive an SMS/email, the announcement said.

The registration is mandatory, and has to be completed at least 24 hours prior to departure.

Starting January 1, 2019, no Indian emigrant holding non-ECR passport would be allowed to travel to these 18 countries without prior registration.
