New Obstacles Faced For Recruitment Of Domestic Workers

20 January 2021 Kuwait

Local offices face new problems in recruiting domestic workers as Kuwait is no longer a preferred destination for some foreign agencies, Al Qabas daily reported.

Informed sources told the daily that Indonesia has restarted sending domestic workers to some neighboring countries, but it is still refraining from providing workforce to Kuwait due to objection to the sponsorship system.

The employment of domestic workers from the Philippines and Ethiopia is also witnessing new obstacles. The sources said that Kuwait stipulated that the domestic workers from Ethiopia should be trained for at least two months in specialized centers, and be fluent in the English language, which was accepted by the Ethiopian side. But the agencies there are not ready to start training due to the vagueness of the decision on permitting the return of the labor force to Kuwait.

The sources pointed out that opening the airways for Ethiopian domestic workers would be the best way to address the current crisis, especially since Ethiopia is not among the 34 countries banned from entering Kuwait.

On the other hand, the sources indicated that the Federation of Domestic Workers Export Agencies in Manila has asked their representatives in Kuwait to implement their demands regarding sending new contracts.

The Philippine offices requested that the domestic worker be allowed to travel during the 6-month probation period in case of incompatibility between the sponsor and the worker.
