Neglect, Slow Work Leave Many Roads In Kuwait Life-threatening For Motorists
Many road projects are currently underway, some under repairs and others being newly-built, but there are major roads that need to be developed which have been in a bad shape for decades, reports Al-Qabas daily. When the two roads are not compatible with the main roads in terms of protection and U turn system, there is an urgent need to provide side protection and bridges, so that cars do not enter these roads at random, because if they do, the lives of the motorists will be endangered and lead to major traffic accidents.
Doubt
There is no doubt that the Abdali Road is a very vital facility connecting the north of the country with the Kuwait City, but it has been a source of neglect for dozens of years and the accidents on this road have been so frequent that this road has rightfully earned the name the ‘road to death’ because many lives have been lost and the history of the country stands out as a testimony.
The Abdali Road has witnessed several tragic traffic accidents during the past years, which have resulted in the deaths of innocent people. A security source on the issue of traffic pointed out that the “responsibility for the situation of roads is currently distributed on three sides: the Public Road Authority responsible for the construction of roads and maintenance of highways only, and the maintenance engineering sector of the Ministry of Public Works, responsible for the maintenance of internal roads in residential areas, and the Kuwait Municipality which is responsible for cleaning contracts for roads in residential areas.
The source pointed out that the current situation is ‘very tragic’, as human lives are being lost daily due to the ‘slowness’ of officials in the implementation of new roads projects for the southern regions. The source called for “working to develop the roads as soon as possible, especially as this road is vital and very important and which is being used by hundreds of motorists throughout the year.” The source stressed, “This serious neglect in the development and reform of the roads for a long time cannot be accepted and the offi- cials need to find an effective solution, and find it fast.”
Services
The source called the services provided by the Abdali and Al-Salmi roads very modest, distant and corrupt and gives a negative impression of the country, and takes the country back to primitive days.
The source is surprised that these roads are not given due attention, although they are vital and traffic is no less than other roads. Take for example, the Nuwaiseeb Road, which is comparatively better and safer in terms of two-way traffic and spaced traffic lanes.
A security source stressed that delays in the development of major roads mean more accidents and tragedies, especially since there is no justification at all for neglecting the development of old roads with the availability of financial resources. The source added, appropriate mechanisms should be put in place to give the private sector an opportunity to offer the required services for the convenience of users of these roads, as is the case in other countries.
The source said that the roads, especially the main, represent an important artery between the concerned parties of the country, and must keep pace with urban expansion and the establishment of new areas and cities, as well as necessary for the movement of trade and transport, and is one of the most important elements of infrastructure that must be developed and integrated to comply with other aspects of the development in the country.
