Mps To Boycott Oath-taking Over Prosecution’s Referral

13 March 2021 Kuwait

The decision of Interior Minister Sheikh Thamer Ali Al-Sabah to refer those who participated in the press conference held recently in the house of MP Badr Al-Dahoum to the Public Prosecution continue to draw parliamentary reactions, especially after the spread of rumors that former National Assembly Speaker Ahmed Al-Saadoun is among those covered by the decision. MP Mehalhal Al-Mudaf disclosed that the MPs will not cooperate with the government or HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled unless the decision is suspended.

Under such circumstances, the MPs will not attend the session slated for the constitutional oath taking of new ministers in the Assembly, he asserted. He pointed out the Ministry of Interior should have advised the citizens to refrain from attending the press conference, instead of allowing them to attend the event only to refer them to the prosecution later. He warned the escalation of tension and creation of crises will result in noncooperation between the legislative and executive authorities, indicating this could lead to the dismissal of Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid and Sheikh Thamer Ali Al-Sabah from the political arena.

Constitutional expert Dr Muhammad Al-Muqatei said the decision of the interior minister has malicious intent, considering the press conference was held after obtaining the approval of the minister. He expects the prosecution to dismiss or withhold the case, adding the decision could be used as basis for filing a complaint against the minister.

In another development, MP Abdulkareem Al-Kandari called for suspending the decision to allow expatriates working in the public sector to transfer to the private sector; as this move contradicts the statement of the government that it is serious in addressing the lopsided demographic structure issue. He stressed the need to cancel the decision, especially since the private sector is already full of marginal workers.

Meanwhile, MP Hamad Rouhaldeen forwarded queries to Minister of State for Municipality, Housing Affairs and Urban Development Affairs Shaya Ahmed Al-Shaya about the issuance of building permits to citizens who received plots in Mutla’a and South Abdullah Mubarak residential areas. He wants to know the number of permits issued; and if no such permit has been issued so far, he inquired about the reason for not.
