Mps Against Government’s Attempt To Impose Taxes On Citizens

12 January 2021 Information

In support of the hard-line parliamentary stances that the government’s program does not include any sign of raising service fees or imposing taxes on citizens, the MPs formed a wall yesterday in the face of government “hints” showing their intention to impose taxes in the country, amid warnings that the move will be politically costly, Al Qabas reported.

MPs have voiced their displeasure against the government showing their intention to impose taxes in the country, in a manoeuvre to relieve the financial burden on its only source (oil) on which the state relies for capital spending on projects and services, and to secure the welfare of citizens. They stressed the need for the government to obtain authorization from Parliament before any step can be taken on this difficult economic path.

The government collided with the parliament’s refusal, against the background of the Minister of Finance, Khalifa Hamadeh, announced the possibility for outlining and introducing an integrated tax management system, while before there was legislation allowing for the imposition of taxes, amid warnings that the move would be politically costly for Minister Hamadeh and even for His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled.

MP Hamdan Al-Azmi warned Minister of Finance, Khalifa Hamadeh, against proceeding with the practice of outlining and installing the tax system, expressing his surprise at “introducing the practice without legislation,” and called on the minister to cancel it.

MP Muhalhal Al-Mudhaf confirmed, in a statement to Al-Qabas, that he rejected any government move to impose taxes on citizens or create an environment for that.
