02 April 2022 Kuwait

The Ministry of Health's Blood Transfusion Services Department announced the opening of a laboratory at the Sheikha Salwa Al-Sabah Stem Cell and Umbilical Cord Center as part of an expansion plan to improve patient care and facilitate the exchange of blood and blood products for the Al-Sabah and Jahra health areas.

Dr. Reem Al-Radwan, Director of the Department, told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Thursday that this is a first of its kind, as a laboratory is being built to preserve blood and its derivatives as part of the Central Blood Bank's support.

The laboratory, according to Al-Radwan, is equipped with the most up-to-date medical technology that meets international requirements for the preservation of blood and its derivatives. He explained that the lab's purpose is to make the exchange of blood and its byproducts easier for hospitals in the Al-Sabah Health and Jahra districts.

According to the sources, these hospitals received the equivalent of 60,000 units of blood and its derivatives in 2021, accounting for half of the yearly consumption of blood and its derivatives.

The ministry hopes that this step will be beneficial and that this improvement and development will help to provide safe blood and its derivatives in a timely manner, as well as meet the needs and requirements of all hospitals in the Sabah Health District and the Jahra District, particularly during accidents and emergencies, according to the sources.
