12 November 2016 Kuwait

The Ministry of Defense has plans to enforce the Conscription Law on Kuwaitis aged between 18 and 35, reports Al-Shahed daily quoting Defense sources. The same sources said the registration will take place during the first 6 months of 2017. The conscripts will be trained in areas designated by the Ministry. The sources added, eight sites have already been designated to receive thousands of applicants during the first half of 2017.

The sources pointed out the period of conscription will be 12 months. The law states the citizens who are eligible for conscription will not be allowed to take employment or start a business if they fail to produce a certificate to prove they have completed the period of conscription and a valid reason thereof to show either their practice has been delayed or they are excluded. The sources added the Cabinet will soon define those who are exempted from conscription. The Ministry of Defense seeks to make use of the law to establish the ‘Reserve Forces’ that will be trained in the use of all kinds of weapons to enhance the defense and the military capabilities, say the sources.
